This is really a minor point, but I want to say it anyway.
JtN has posited that Ed Duncan's daily postings to ASP are not only
boring, but are the reason so many members have left. I've of course
disagreed, but a thought just occurred to me. In my brief rebuttal, I
cited Sailorman Jack's postings, but I'd forgotten another. Allen
MacMillan.
Allen's posts, "...From Merry Old England" were always exceedingly short
and consistently similar, but they were charming, warm and human, as
were Sailorman Jack's, as are Ed's.
Those postings, from those folks, are something of the essence of ASP,
something of the essence of pipe smokers in general. No, they're not
the lifeblood of current trends in tobacco blending or pipe design and
architecture, but they are a bit of the life blood of the human beings
who smoke those and other (maybe lesser) tobaccos in those and other
(maybe lesser) pipes.
To the Allens, Jacks and Eds of ASP, thanks for your faithfulness to the
group.
Bert
Its all marketing Bert. The ASP brand of forums has reduced down to:
Morning Smoke
Afternoon Smoke
Evening Smoke
Nite Smoke
Night Owls Smoke
From our last Roll Call I counted about 70 names in the responses. But
when you look through our posts what you see is a week after week
drill of What Ya Smokin' threads. Some appear to be a copy and paste
time after time. Out of the 70 ASPers, there is only about 10 who are
participating. Someone drops in to see whats going on and finds
little of interest. Truth is that some of the folks who are in these
5 x a day threads rarely start other than a What Ya Smokin Thread.
Most of the forum sites have a "What You Smokin This Month" thread.
I've suggested before that we ought to maybe just have a "Todays
Smoke" thread. Same number of posts, just under one thread.
How long has it been since someone did a tobacco review?
How about pipe reviews?
Best tobacco to cellar?
Best pipe while driving?
Add to that, there are hardly any OT posts anymore.
Those kinda threads used to be interesting and they were coming up
with regularity. But those are few and far between anymore. Its also
been a while since we had someone come to ASP just starting out with
pipes asking questions.
A quick check on Smokers Forum shows the following hot threads:
Perhaps My Favorite VA Flake
Hal O' the Wind
Full Virgina Flake
Marlin Flake Mystery
Orlik Dunhill Flake
9th on their list is their What's In Your Pipe - December. All the
threads sound interesting. Right now at 0530 they have 39 people
on-line. Reading some interesting threads.
I'd guess that our marketing problem is related to our lack of
meaningful conversation about the hobby. All we are doing is boring
the hell outa people and sending them elsewhere for better
conversation. Our few newcomers don't stay long.
Solution, worth a try, we need to add some meaningful content. Things
about the hobby in addition to what we are currently burning in the
bowl.
Just some thoughts.
AL ...
Al, ya best be careful in what your saying the problems are cause I
said basically the same thing and now Bert has got all upset and wants
to almost Sandusky me with it.
Sad to see that others are seeing things kind of the same way I am but
like I said, be careful now some folks hate it when there cages are
rattled with opinions and such they do not agree with.
