Not sure where you live, but if it's possible you may want to contact the public utilities dept. in the municipality of your residence. Sewers are *not* supposed to back up in people's basements, regardless of the status of drain plugs. You may have to fight the bureaucrats, but you may be able to get at least partial compensation for your loss.
I would definitely document as much as possible, and take pictures too if it's not too late.

Disclaimer: not a legal expert but I do work for the public utilities dept. of a large municipality...
