Most likely most folks here have read the first one. It's a reprint of
a 2005 article by Peter Carlson... a nostalgic look at the time when
pipe smoking was intimately woven into the fabric of our culture. OK,
so you've seen it... doesn't hurt to bring it out and dust it off and
reread. (And maybe someone hadn't seen it.)

The second one has absolutely nothing to do with pipe smoking. I just
happen to think it's the best newspaper article ever written.

Oh... I have a bit of lore to add to the Carlson article.

I remember going with my dad, in the 60's to buy a car... I can't
remember if it was the LTD or the VW Bug... but anyway... after a
whole afternoon of haggling, and the deal was signed and done... I
remember the car salesman telling my dad -- he of the sandblasted
briars and Captain Black -- "We hate seeing a pipe smoker walk onto
the lot. Pipe smokers fiddle and think. You try to look them in the
eye and make the deal, and they start messing around with their pipe.
Pipe smokers are really hard to sell."
