Well as many of you in the USA are aware, this weekend is Memorial Day, for
most the unofficial start of Summer. As with most of you and your
businesses, ours will be closed in observance of Memorial Day, on Monday,
May 31st. We will also have a short day on Friday, with our office closing
after the shipping cutoff at 2 PM, and obviously we'll be closed over the
weekend (like every weekend.) Any orders received after 2 PM Eastern on
Friday will ship out the following Tuesday. Since it is a short week for
most people (oh, and the fact I'm waiting on estate pipes from the
restorer), we have a short update this week with only unsmoked pipes.
For starters, we have five beautiful brand new Castellos For over 60 years,
the Castello name has been synonymous with high-end, collectible pipes in a
way no other brand (save Dunhill) can compete. Formed by Carlo Scotti in
1947, Scotti (and later, his son-in-law Franco Coppo) grew Castello into one
of the premier pipe companies in the world. As a pioneer in high grade
pipes, Castello has continually raised the bar in quality and craftsmanship
against which all other Italian pipes are judged. Castello's innovations -
including adoption of extensive grading and nomenclature, their use of
well-aged air-cured wood, and being the first company to embrace Lucite for
stems - is proof that they changed pipe making, and collecting, forever.
Their influence is vast, with names like Caminetto, Radice and many other
Italian artisans tracing their roots back to Castello; in addition, their
style has spawned numerous imitators around the world. There is no denying
it: The pipe world would be a much different place without the passion and
innovation that Castello created. Check out the Vergin Natural bent, the
Pi-optioned Dublin or that gorgeous 2K Collection and literally should have
been a fiamatta!
There are also five unsmoked Northern Briars. Northern Briar Pipe Repair
Service was founded in 1958 by George Walker, who had been in charge of
production at Duncan Briars for over 35 years. Ian Walker - George's
grandson - started in the business in 1972, and in the 1980s Ian started
carving pipes. Today, Northern Briars are known around the world for their
value for the money. Completely handcrafted by Ian utilising Italian briar
and German rod stock, it's truly amazing that these pipes can be offered at
the price they are. I can personally attest to their fantastic smoking
qualities; one of my Northerns is in regular rotation and is smoked almost
every day. Don't miss the lovely Sea Urchin with Silver - they always go
quickly and I expect this one will be no exception!
Finally we have five great Posellas. Vitaliano Posella's family is steeped
in the tradition of briar; his father operated a small briar mill in
Calabria, and Vitaliano started out his pipe making career by partnering
with his brother-in-law. You may have heard of his brother-in-law; his name
is Tonino Jacono. Tonino and Vitaliano worked together for a number of years
until Tonino moved to a different town and the brothers-in-law decided to
pursue their own respective paths. Tonino, of course, found fame in the USA
thanks to McCranie's importing his pipes, but Posella never reached out for
distributorship, relying instead on his local market. Then, after a number
of years his pipes began to reach a larger audience. The Piperack is pleased
and honoured to now be a dealer for these fine pipes, because I think they
offer an incredible value for the money and are both distinctive and
attractive. You will immediately see a resemblance to Tonino's work; this is
to be expected. However, these are by no means copies of Jaconos! Vitaliano
is an incredibly talented craftsman in his own right, creating everything
from basic rusticated classic shapes starting at $120 all the way up to
fantastic fiamatta straightgrain freehands that would just blow your mind!
His rustication is unlike anything else I've seen before, and while some of
his shapes remind one of Jaconos, there's also a passing resemblance to
Tombari's work on Le Nuvole as well as a nod in the direction of Charatan.
But when you look at these pipes, you don't see all these disparate
influences; you see something fresh and new and interesting, and that's the
point: The influences are a hint, and the real prize lies in the culmination
of it all. We've gotten fantastic feedback from all of you after selling
more than half of our first batch, so these are sure to go quickly.
Don't miss the unsmoked Rinaldo Triade YY Silverline with a great discount,
or the awesome Posella Four Star Freehand Dublin with Plateaux! The next
update comes June 4th with more great pipes (including estates) from around
the world! Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend!
