Hi Lily,
Have you considered the Peterson Racing Green series of pipes?
The Irish Sea ones do look nice, but I think the Racing Green ones are
even nicer, sporting a beautiful Sterling band. But that's just a
matter of personal taste. Here's a link to a picture of a Racing
Green that I own: http://smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/peterson/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=49308
Dark colored stains tend to accentuate the shape of the pipe as
opposed to the grain. However, upon closer inspection, you can
definitely see the grain of these pipes. The Irish Sea pipes are
stained green with a hint of blue, displaying the grain of the briar
close up. I think these pipes usually have a standard fishtail bit,
and I don't think that they are "system" pipes.
There is usually a table set up at the Chicago Pipe Show
displaying nothing but Peterson pipes, so its very likely they'll be
there this year, but its unknown whether they'll have the Irish Sea
finish available. I hope you find a nice pipe for your husband. Good
luck to you.
Dom
