I wonder -- how would one do that? Tongs of some sort, maybe... with a
tiny, broken-off piece of coal, held near the tobacco?

How would one light the tobacco without scorching the pipe? Coals are
scorching hot. Or wouldn't a scorched rim have been an issue back
then?
