Hi All-
I'm new to both ASP and pipe smoking in general (on and off for a
couple of months). I've been looking through this forum(newsgroup?)
and reading as much as I can, but i still have a couple of questions.
1.) My first problem is that I can actually really "taste"
anything....I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Am I maybe smoking to
fast and hot? I haven't had a problem with tongue bite, and it
certainly doesn't feel hot. Maybe I need something stronger? I am
embarrassed to say that I don't actually know what I am smoking. I
went to a tobacco shop and picked out a few good smelling tobacco's
out of their bulk jars. I am also smoking a corn cob pipe (I wanted to
make sure I liked it first) if that makes any difference. I absolutely
love the way pipe tobacco smells, and I want to find the taste. Maybe
my 'buds aren't sensitive enough.
2.) I like to smoke while I take my walk. How does smoking outside
effect ones choice of pipe and of tobacco?
3.) I found a very nice looking solid wood pipe. What is the
difference in terms of smokability, durability and care compared to a
pipe with a removable stem?
Thank You

Welcome Zac, feel free to ask as many questions as you like and we'll
all try and help. Regarding your first questions:
1. It may be that you picked a light mixture or that your just not use
to pipe tobacco and the nuances of flavor. It may also be that you
packed it rather lightly. You should approach smoking your tobacco as
a relaxing pastime and smoke as you breathe. It was a good idea to buy
a corncob to start out, they are great smokers for the price. Some
pipe smokers are dedicated cob smokers and that's all they smoke.
2. I can't really answer this since I don't smoke my pipes outside but
generally speaking it shouldn't have any effect. Some smokers who
smoke while walking prefer a smaller pipe and some will opt for bowl
caps to keep the wind out.
3. I assume from what you're saying that the bowl and stem are one
solid piece. In terms of smokability, durability and care it should be
about the same as a regualr pipe. Maybe more so since it won't have a
tenon and mortise to contend with.
Also, I would practice becomming a 'dry smoker' by not clenching your
pipe but balance it between your teeth or take 'sips' from it while
holding it. This will significantly cut down the number of pipe
cleaners that you use and leave your pipe cleaner.
Hope this help
Robert
