I'm fond of Holmes' blasted billiard in the early part of the movie.
I don't normally like the shape, but the very slight curve of the stem
made it for me.  Now I want one.  :-)  The saddle bit billiard at the
end of the movie wasn't as much to my liking.

I saw the movie. I agree that the setting seemed much more realistic
than the Granada/PBS series. But the TV series seemed much more
truthful to the personality of Holmes - Robert Downey is NOT Holmes,
but the (early) Jeremy Brett could have been.

That said, the movie took place in the late 19th century. I THOUGHT
that the first sandblast pipes were made by Alfred Dunhill in the
1910-20 time frame. Is the sandblast pipe smoked by Holmes an
anachronism??

Ah, the devil is in the details, isn't he? :-)

That said I did like both the movie version of Holmes--including the gritty sooty industrial age visual and a bullet-time without the wire-fu that's very viscerally exciting to watch, and the bonus of Watson getting married which is a totally unexpected element of the movies, especially an action movie--and the tv version of Sherlock Holmes in the 21st century, with its more cerebral focus, character development of Holmes and Watson, tho I too liked the more subtle visuals showing Sherlock's mind at work. ...
