This week, The Piperack has a nice selection of ten fantastic Northern
Briars. Recently, I asked Ian to make some larger traditional pieces for The
Piperack, and he did not disappoint. Northern Briar Pipe Repair Service was
founded in 1958 by George Walker, who had been in charge of production at
Duncan Briars for over 35 years. Ian Walker - George's grandson - started in
the business in 1972, and in the 1980s Ian started carving pipes. Today,
Northern Briars are known around the world for their value for the money.
Completely handcrafted by Ian utilising Italian briar and German rod stock,
it's truly amazing that these pipes can be offered at the price they are. I
can personally attest to their fantastic smoking qualities; one of my
Northerns is in regular rotation and is smoked almost every day. This week,
there are a number of extra large pieces, including an extra large Billiard,
an extra large Apple with silver band and a fantastic selection of Northern
Magnums. Ian is starting to be known for his larger pieces, and when we get
some in, they never last long - in fact, the last batch of Magnums sold out
in an hour! There's an exquisite Magnum Bent Bulldog, a mammoth Magnum Apple
and many more, but the crowning jewel, size-wise, would have to be the extra
extra extra long Lumberman. With a thick round shank at 6 1/2" long and an
overall length of over 10", this is one not to be missed.
This week, the "Piperack Pick" would have to be the Lovely Astley's Stacked
XL Smooth Lovat. Many of you are familiar with Astley's, the legendary pipe
shop in London. Unfortunately this last bastion of old-time pipe shops
closed its doors a few years back, ending a tradition that spanned back into
the 1800s. Additionally, Astley did not make their own pipes, but rather
contracted with various English manufacturers, including Charatan, Upshall,
Comoy, and GBD, to supply pipes for the shop under the "Astley's" label.
This particular piece is a higher-grade smooth stacked Lovat/Lumberman with
a long shank and short stubby saddle bit. There's no telling who made this,
but if I had to guess, I would say that the style and cut looks most like
Upshall. The graining is a beautiful crosscut, with plenty of great birdseye
showing, and the stem is the original with no toothmarks. A classic example
of traditional English style and elegance. Rated 9.5 out of 10, this is sure
to make any fan of traditional British briar quite happy, and I doubt it
will last long! Also from England, check out the three Dunhills (including a
near-mint 1977 Redbark LBS-style billiard), a fantastic 1948 family-era
Sasieni Four Dot patent, a pair of Charatans, and many more. In Italian,
there are only two, but they're gorgeous: A pair of Castellos, including a
Castello Collection 2K straightgrain Dublin in fantastic condition. Denmark
brings us a pair of Stanwells, a nice Nording, and others, and there's even
a Tim West from Columbus, Ohio.
Don't miss the gorgeous Peter Heeschen P Shape A Grade with Ivory, or the
early Nichols-era Barling's Make Special Billiard! Next update comes July 17
with more great pipes from around the world!
