This week, The Piperack has a nice selection of ten fantastic Northern
Briars. Recently, I asked Ian to make some larger traditional pieces for The
Piperack, and he did not disappoint. Northern Briar Pipe Repair Service was
founded in 1958 by George Walker, who had been in charge of production at
Duncan Briars for over 35 years. Ian Walker - George's grandson - started in
the business in 1972, and in the 1980s Ian started carving pipes. Today,
Northern Briars are known around the world for their value for the money.
Completely handcrafted by Ian utilising Italian briar and German rod stock,
it's truly amazing that these pipes can be offered at the price they are. I
can personally attest to their fantastic smoking qualities; one of my
Northerns is in regular rotation and is smoked almost every day. This week,
there are a number of extra large pieces, including a couple pieces on sale,
a large Four-Square Panel, and a MASSIVE Sea Urchin, but the crowning jewel,
size-wise, would have to be the Magnum bent billiard. With a bowl almost 3
1/2" tall and an overall length of well over 8", this is one not to be
missed.
This week's "Piperack Pick" goes to the Rinaldo Lithos YYY Tan Silverline
Author. The Rinaldo brothers starting making pipes in 1974, and continue
today, using only the finest, well aged Mediterranean briar. Many in the
business and the hobby rave about their superior smoking characteristics.
And I admit, I was a skeptic. But I've smoked one, and I'm just amazed! This
Rinaldo is a tan Lithos YYY Silverline Author with a faux brindle acrylic
stem and fancy silver band. This shape is one of the most popular Rinaldo
shapes, and in my opinion there are few that can cut this shape better. The
Lithos line is Rinaldo-speak for "Rustic", the YYY refers to the size
(around a group 5 size), and the Silverline is any pipe which features
Rinaldo's beautiful silverwork. Rated 9.5 out of 10, I'm sure this one will
go fast, so if you've wanted to try a Rinaldo but were waiting for one to
pop up on the estate market, now is your chance! Also in Italian, there are
great pipes from Ser Jacopo (check out the L2 Bulldog with gorgeous grain),
a rarely seen 1985 Savinelli Autograph Collector, and a near-mint older
Caminetto Business Zulu. If you prefer a "Stiff Upper Lip", there's a
near-mint Dunhill Redbark, a fantastic 1960's family-era Sasieni Four Dot
"Grosvenor" Bent Bulldog, a cool earlier Ferndown Bark with engraved silver
band, a larger GBD Collector Virgin Canadian, a BEAUTIFUL Charatan
Perfection Bent Bulldog and others. From the rest of the world, you won't
want to miss the Lannes Johnson smooth Dublin, the Oliver and Max Brandt
"Brandy" bent Dublin, or the older W.O. Larsen Super 15 Bent stacked
billiard.
