With winter approaching, my ability to imbibe upon my burgeoning stash of
stogies is switfly fleeting.  I tried pipes about 5-6 years ago, but my main
problem with the format is that (1) I was burning the ever loving crap outta
my tongue, and (2) the tobaccos I smoked had very little flavor compared to
the majority of the cigars I enjoy.  I found the process very wanting..

However, a buddy of mine recently let me upon his secret that he was a
pipesugger, and smokes some sort of house blend that he gets from a local
tobacconist.  From what I recall, I had at one time about a dozen tins to
choose from, including a few from GL Pease and some stuff from Samuel Gawith
(and I think some 2001 McClelland's Christmas Cheer which I can still smell
the ketchup from).  I probably did not do a good job in seasoning the pipes
I have (some Stanwells and a Peterson), but I just couldn't get over the
bite that would consistenly happen as my tobacco would not stay lit (not
only was the tobacco probably too moist, but I tend to smoke outdoors during
the evening in near 100% humidity down here in Louisiana), and perhaps I
wasn't packing it right.  As a matter of fact, the best success I had the
entire time was with some stoved Lane hazelnut which someone sent me mixed
with some Gawith Brown Rope #4.

So, saying all of dat, I have a few questions:

(1) Are there any full bodied pipe tobaccos that can match the intensity of
flavor of a good nicaraguan cigar?  Not really looking for the same flavors
(well, I do like the natural sweetness of the leaf, and also like the
nuttiness of some dominican cigars), just would like to taste something that
doesn't resemble tobacco flavored air.
(2) Would buying a Kirsten pipe, for instance, help alleviate some of the
problems that I had with the bite?
(3) Can anybody suggest a link for a good way to stove tobacco?  I only
intend to do this with a few bulk aromatics as an experiment.

Thanks in advance,

Gregory

Glad you decided to bat for our team :), you have got some great
suggestions all ready,
might I add, Go to Greg Pease's home page read bout his blends. I
believe he has one that has cigar leaf in it, His blends are stellar,
If there is another blender out there that puts together a better
blend I never heard of them and would love to find out who it is, keep
smokin and postin your observations on here, the journey is like
sooooo worth it, or you can order Haddos Delight and end your search.
I would mainline this stuff if I could. It is truely a stunning blend.
Luck on ya mate! You just got to sometimes put on your big girl
panties with ths bite thing (this is wrong  dismiss this  out of hand
lol). Some blenders and some houses seem to put out a lot ofblends
that bite the tongue. MacBarens seems to bother a lot of people. They
have a couple of interesting blends but it seems over their brand
spectrum, it leaves me wanting. I one time decided to smoke all there
blends to get a feel for them and taken as a whole it left me wantin
C& D amaze me across their wide spectrum of offerings they manage to
avoid the sin of being a one trick pony.. Everything from Cross-eyed
Cricket to old Joe Krantz, someone who creates a blend like CEC and  by
the same token create some blends that arejust awesome, amazes me.
What I am saying in this novel is, Find a house mosey through the
blends without a lot of expectations but remember the type of tobaccos
that are in the blends you liked look for those same tobaccos, if it
is Latakia, plan on not smoking in the house. Enjoy the journey Sorry
so long I could not help myself

these posts have been excellent not for just a beginner but to an old
timer like me I learned a lot. I too like a Cohiba Maduro once in a
while( when everyone is gone) but Cohibas are hare hard to come by. I
usse to spend part of the year in Mexico and I could get them easy
there. baack to the subject. I am anxious to try Dr. Blues suggestion
since I have never used that blend before. I think McClelland makes a
pipe tobacco from a cigar leaf also.. I am making a copy of these
posts to my microsoft word so I can refer to it easily.
