It depends on your experience with any given flake. For some flakes,
I'll brake them up by hand and then rub this between my palms to
produce much finer pieces. Other flakes, I might just ball up the
flake between my fingers and drop it in. If you want to get a really
finely broken up flake, just drop them into a food chopper, that works
great!

assume it will never be like a loose tobacco. I found I am usually
stuffing my pipe with something looks like a miniature kindling,
rather than the grass like quality of a ribbon cut or loose chip
tobacco. A flake FAQ would be good for use beginners.
