Favorite Pipe and Tobacco Combination

Hi all,

I am a world traveler due to the nature of my work. Most often I travel to countries which have very little pipe culture, and so I find myself with a huge dilemma - Out of my 50+ pipes and many tobaccos that I have cellared away, which ones will accompany me on journeys which often last a month or more. I tend to travel light, so it's typically one pipe and one tobacco that I usually carry in one of those small disposable ziploc 'tupperware' type containers. Like many here, I often find that pipes and tobaccos usually 'mate'; and the enjoyment of one is often fully dependent on the other.

I'd love to hear from all of you - which tobacco would you take with you, if you only had one to choose from, but also, what pipe would you take to enjoy it?

Here are my most frequent travelers:

1. G&H Dark Birdseye in a small Tinsky dark brown blast cutty. The cake on this pipe is so thick that I can barely fit my pinky finger in it. However, I find that a nice roll of this beautiful shag fits cozily inside the pipe and provides a short cool smoke with enough of a punch to keep me motivated! In a pinch (when I cannot smoke,) this tobacco also lends itself to a good chew - and if you save that chew (Dries out quick in the hotter countries!!!) it becomes a milder evening smoke. Crazy? Yes - crazy like a fox...

2. G&H 60% Black and 40% Brown XX Rope Blend in a 70's era Shamrock saddle bit billiard. This is another pipe with a thick cake. The unabashed age and general 'cheapness' of the Shamrock go well with the pungent aromas spewing forth from the rope 'baccys. This is a combination that means business - convention be damned!!! As a bonus, the ropes are very compact and save well. They need no humidification. You can carry a ton of rope where you might need twice the space for a rubbed out mix, and it lends itself well to slicing out a day's worth in the morning. It's become a morning ritual on the longest of my trips.

I would love to hear from you folks - even if you don't travel, it's great to gain insight into what 'baccys go best with what pipes - along with how much age is on those pipes. We'll all find new favorites!
