I find that my Don Carlos pipes have a distinctive "creamy" flavor. They
seem to make tobacco taste richer and fuller. I have a dozen or so and all
but one have that quality no matter how old or new.
I also have a huge number of Stanwell pipes that have no distinctive flavor
but the quality they possess is that they all smoke really well and seldom
bitter or hot even if they are filthy.
The last batch are the old Caminetto pipes. They have a distinctive flavor
that I probably could identify in a blind test. I can not describe it, but
they are great smokes.
I have tried several of the cheap American pipes such as Kaywoodie, Grabow
etc which have a huge following on another newsgroup. Maybe it is the
aluminum in the stem but they always taste bad and smoke hot no matter how
old or the grade.

I know some smokers say that a pipe tastes only like the tobacco
that¹s in it. But I smoke lots of 965 in my pipes, and my 965 tastes
different in each. Also, it seems to me that my different brands of
pipes share similarities in flavor. For example, my Petes all taste
low and earthy. The English vocabulary for describing flavors and
aromas is quite small, and most often familiar flavors are used to
describe other flavors (i.e. ³tastes like chicken² or ³a nutty
flavor²) Do some your pipes have their own unique flavor, or do some
of your pipes brands share a flavor? I would be interested to see the
words you could use to describe the flavors of some of your pipes or
pipe brands.
