SARASOTA — Citing the burden they place on taxpayers who pay for
government workers' health insurance, Sarasota County officials
announced Monday that they no longer will hire smokers.
In Florida, the right not to hire employees who smoke was upheld in 1995
by the state Supreme Court after a prospective employee sued North Miami..
Sarasota County officials cited Centers for Disease Control research
that put the annual cost of hiring a smoker at $3,400 a year in lost
productivity and medical expenses.
The policy makes Sarasota County the first county in Southwest Florida
to make smoking a hiring issue. Charlotte and Manatee counties do not,
though Manatee has policies designed to discourage employees from smoking.

I wonder what they'll do when a minority smoker applies.
I wonder what they'll do when they calculate the "lost productivity"
incurred by people who eat junk food or imbibe alcoholic beverages? At
some point one assumes that this madness will be exposed for precisely
what it is. Let's just hope that point isn't in the far distant future.

They won't Tim, it doesn't fit the end game they are going for. It
isn't about honest money saving, it's about making them feel good and
superior about themselves. Otherwise, they'd honestly review money
lost to pregnancy, HIV, obesity, you name it. I've been enjoying a
pipe for over 6 years now--cigars even longer and lost exactly 0 hours
due to any smoking related illness. The irony is I've lost much work
time due to physical training accidents, pulled muscles, broken bones
and the like...and will one day retire from the military with a
disability caused by injuries sustained "staying in shape".
Of course, they will end up hiring a bunch of dour sour pusses who are
intent on interfering in other peoples lives and scared to death that
someone, somewhere is enjoying themselves more than they. Perfect
employees for such a gov't.
