Congratulations!
I don't see it as a test of wills with your wife, or anything like
that. It seems to me like a good compromise solution that makes both
the husband and wife happy. Like it or not, pipe smoke is strong, and
non-smokers are affected by the smell. (In the book Dreadnought,
Robert Massie describes how the future King Edward would smoke his
cigars after dinner when the ladies, including Queen Victoria had left
the table. To avoid being caught, he would blow the smoke up the
chimney! Also, the men wore smoking jackets to avoid having their
clothes smell of smoke and offend a woman's delicate sensiblitities.)
Different couples have different rules. A former girlfriend of mine
was a heavy smoker, and I could smoke anywhere with no problem (she
would probably light up too). My wife is a non-smoker, and sensitive
to strong smells. Although she would let me smoke in the house (has
invited me to do so), I prefer not to do so to make her comfortable.
(and yes, I pay most of the bills).
So again, congratulations. Spend some time decorating your den (or
"man cave") and it is a win-win situation in my opinion.

Hello ASP!
Since my wife told me I could smoke my pipe in a remote corner of the
basement, I spent the day moving some boxes we had stored and setting up a
able for my pipes and tobacco. We went to dinner with a few friends, I got
home and moved all my stuff into my quaint little corner. Set up the
laptop, loaded a pipe and..... AM SMOKING MY FIRST PIPE IN MY HOUSE!!!
Now, I did promise her that I would quit chewing Beechnut if she let me
smoke in the house, so tomorrow I should be finishing my last pouch and
become a PIPE ONLY kind of guy! Oh how I love that woman!!
Decided to celebrate my spot with a bowl of Best in Show in one of my
favorite Basket Pipes. It signifies the love of the hobby my wife and I do
together--training our dogs--and the simplicity of my life--an inexpensive,
yet dear to my heart pipe.
Thanks for sharing this moment with me. I'm basking in the glory of an
understanding wife and persistence!
