Hi guysGreetings, Roger.
Thanks for your very helpful comments, It is a strange situation to find
oneself in, normally you would expect that if someone has had a heart
attack
the first thing to do would be to quit smoking immediately. That is how I
thought at first, but looking back over my life, I stated smoking when I
was
13 years old in school, I am now 56, so for the past 43 years my life has
been associated by the inhalation of cigerette smoke, and although one
would
expect it to be relativly easy to quit after such a dramatic life
threatening experience, I'm afraid this is not the case. One thing that
puzzled me, when I was in hospital recovering from my heart attack, was
that
there were 24 male patients on the ward with me, all had suffered a heart
attack, some mild, some very severe, we were in the cardiac extensive
care
ward, and out of these 24 people, 25 including myself. I was the only one
who had ever smoked, NONE of the other 24 patients had ever smoked in
thier
lives, or at least thats what they said and I had no reason to doubt
them.
When I was in the emergency room actually having the heart attack, they
asked me if I smoked, I said yes of course, then as they were taking me
out
of the ward my wife asked the nurse what she thought caused the heart
attack, to which she replied "smoking" I wonder what she told the
relatives
of the other 24 guys in there who had never smoked in thier lives, makes
you
wonder, doesn't it.
I managed to quit the cigerettes after a very hard battle but I did used
to
enjoy a pipe now and then, as I said I never inhaled the smoke. I suppose
I
am just hoping to hear that pipe smoking is OK and carries no risk
element,
obviously I realise this is not the case, but then again, we all have to
go
sooner or later, I suppose its down to me to decide wether to enjoy the
occasional pipe and take the associated risks or just quit altogether and
leave it at that.
I quit smoking a while back for 3.5 years and found it quite easy to be
honest, but I started again as people often do. I think that this time I
have been told I MUST STOP SMOKING that is making it more difficult, but
then again I dont have to do anything really, its up to me. Anyway I am
rambling on here, thanks for your input, it is appreciated
take care
Roger

I haven't mentioned this on the group heretofore, but last May I died of
congestive heart failure. Fortunately, it didn't take (obviously).
However, of the cardiac/thoracic/et.al. doctors dealing with me, the
ONLY one that said anything about smoking was a small Indian gentleman
who sounded like he was exorcising a demon, rather than simply saying "I
don't think you should smoke". And yes, every member of my care team is
aware, through one-to-one questions and answers, that I smoke a pipe.
Just my experience, YMMV. And, no, I haven't stopped smoking.
Cheers,
Frank
Hi Frank
Sorry if I sound thick, but what does YMMV mean?
cheers
