Re: The 2008 ASP Zippo Design Contest

Once again, it's time to put together the alt.smokers.pipes Zippo
lighter for the upcoming year.  Last year we tried something new -
allowing anyone who wished to to submit a design for the lighter and
choosing from the submitted designs by vote.  It worked out great and we
had five designs to choose from.  The winner of the vote for the ASP
2007 lighter design was Ken Dixon's excellent design featuring Sherlock
Holmes.  Steven Fowler's design, a chrome version of the standard brass
ASP Zippo was so popular, it was offered as an alternate to the ASP
Traditional Zippo.

The only problem with last year's contest was we started too early.
That's not a problem this year.

So, enough retrospective.  Here's how it's going to go:  you think up a
design for the 2008 ASP Zippo.  If you want to draw it, as long as you
can email it to me, fine.  If you can describe it, email your
description to me.  Once I have your design idea, I'll draw it or clean
up your artwork, make it so that it will work on a Zippo, work out the
colors and the style of lighter, etc. and email it back to you.  We will
correspond until we are both satisfied that the design is what you want.
I will then do a rendering of the lighter as it will appear after
manufacture and post it along with the other submitted designs on a
convenient website.

Once the designs are all on the website, I'll post to alt.smokers.pipes
the location of the website and the voting will begin.  The design with
the most votes at the end of the voting period will be the
alt.smokers.pipes 2008 Lighter, and we can begin taking orders.

If you're worried about your artistic ability, don't.  I'll do the
drawing.  Only two out of the five entries last year came to me with any
artwork at all.  If you're a Photoshop/Illustrator whiz and you can send
me finished artwork, great!  Less work for me!  The important thing is
the idea and I'll accept your idea in any way you can communicate it to
me, short of interpretive dance.  It'll be fun.  I'm easy to work with -
ask the guys from last year.

Here are the deadlines:
Submission period: from now until midnight January 6th, 2008 (that's two
weeks - should be long enough).
Voting period: from January 7th (when the designs will be displayed on
the website) until midnight January 13th.
Note: the submission period may be shortened (with notice posted on ASP)
if there are sufficient entries and submissions seem to be all in.  In
this case, the voting period may be moved up also.  All of this is
subject to change in case of hard drive crash, plagues of locusts, etc.
but you understand that.

So, if your design is chosen, what do you win?  Fame, bragging rights
and the adoration of the masses.  What more could one want?  So get
cracking!

Send all entries to: bbur...@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Bill "send 'em in" Burney

Can't wait to see the 08" design entries. Asp is loaded with
talent !!
