It is experience I guess. After a while you will get the hang of it.
Keep trying and don't give up. For me I fill the pipe so I can breath
loosely through the stem of the pipe. Try filling the pipe while your
mouth is still on the stem of the pipe and pull in a breath while you
are still filling your pipe. If you have a tough draw out of the pipe
then it is filled to tightly. It could be the tobacco you are using.
I know some types of tobacco like certain flake tobaccos do that to
me. So what I do is let it dry some and rub out the flake and put
very tiny pieces fully rubbed out on the top of the tobacco so it
lights easily. Also, if all else fails and you are a faithful person,
say a prayer to the Good Lord Jesus...maybe you are not including him
in your hobby. It works for me.
