Re: Tell the New Guy: What types of tobacco and why?

What is it about the leaf or the blend's characteristics

So, why do you love what you love in tobaccos and what keeps you
coming back, bowl after bowl?

That's a fair question, Pastor. First and foremost I have to like the
taste. Fortunately for me I like the taste of almost all types of
tobacco. I simply love Va/per, top-shelf burleys, and English
blends. Lately I've been learning to appreciate Balkans, as well.
I'm always in search of a good aromatic, but I have only found one
that I can smoke regularly. I really like a good straight Virginia,
but I'm a lot pickier here. I need my Virginias to have some age on
them. It generally depends on the time of day or season of the year
that will determine which type of blend I will smoke. For example, I
love a top-shelf burley or Va/perique in the morning. What I like
about each taste is: sweetness of Virginias, toasty/nutty taste of
burley, smokiness/saltiness of latakia, and how perique is kind of
sour and brings out flavors of other things it's mixed with,
particularly red Virginias.

Next would be body. I despise a blend that is too thin. I like a
medium to heavy body blend. It seems body often correlates with
nicotine, with the exception of Balkans. Latakia has a lot of body,
but not too much nicotine.

I hate anything that fries my tongue. I'm not very sensitive to this,
as I can smoke McClelland Virginias all day and not get bitten.
However, almost every Mac Baren blend bites me, including Navy Flake
on occasion.

Other factors include how something burns. Is it hard to pack or keep
lit? Burley is so easy to smoke, I find, while Balkans are hardest to
smoke to the bottom of the bowl. I wish latakia burned as well as
burley.
