James Schlesinger: Pipe smoker
Schlesinger (b. 1929) was one of the most remarkable public servants
of the 1970s. He holds a PhD in economics from Harvard and served as
Secretary of Defense and Director of the CIA for Presidents Nixon and
Ford before becoming Secretary of Energy under President Carter.
He was notoriously arrogant and had many personality conflicts with
his peers. President Ford fired him as SecDef and replaced him with
Donald Rumsfeld in 1975.
He was rarely seen without his pipe back then, but I don't know if he
still smokes.
