Hello ASP,
Hope the spring is treating you and your families well.
I've been mulling this issue since the beginning of June and It's been hard
coming up with the right words. I'm sure I still don't have them but the
decision has been made so I'm doing the best I can explaining.
The short of it is that I'm giving up the leather business in both pipe and
other accessories as my full time thing and am actively seeking regular
employment in it's stead. While I will not be giving up leather craft
entirely the odds are very good that the lag time between orders will
increase drastically. I am at this point unsure about what I will do about
pipe shows but I have no plans to attend any shows this summer and Richmond
is up in the air as well. As to next Chicago, well I have a reservation and
tables but they can always be cancelled, I'll make that decision as the show
gets closer. I will keep the website open and I'm certainly open to requests
for leather work but once my stock of available bags is gone I probably
won't have inventory ready to go and will accept commissions for work only
as time and situation permits. I will NOT take commissions that I cannot
fill in reasonable time as my reputation is far too important to me, I've
seen way to many superb craftspeople and artisans badmouthed over delivery
promises to fall into that trap. For those that have spoken to or emailed
me about specific pipe bags and custom items I certainly plan to honor any
and all obligations and quotes I have made you so don't worry about that.
As to the why of all this, well first off my two teenagers will be bound for
college over the next 4 years and the thought of not having a regular
paycheck is troubling to me. I never really expected the leather business to
pan out as a full time thing, I set out to make the finest leather pipe
accessories ever and I think in some ways I accomplished that task. I've
been very busy over the past few years doing this and have made almost 400
pipe bags for customers and several thousand other items such as holsters
and pipe socks over the past 4 years with nary ever a complaint and loads of
praise. I truly appreciate that and the support I've gotten from the pipe
community at large. This year so far has been rough and orders are down
considerably. Chicago was not nearly as prosperous for me at least this year
as in the past and that has also taken it's toll.
In the end, while I hope to always craft leather goods I can offer no
promises for the future. To this end if you've always considered one of my
bags now is probably a good time to act on you desires. There are by my
count 18 bags ready for sale on my website. I have adjusted the prices to
make them a very attractive buy and I am willing to accept terms for payment
(contact me about a specific bag for more info). The bags are located here:

All the best and thanks for all of your support through the years,
Neil
