Interesting..according to an internet source, they never changed
it..just the tin description..apparently it's always been there (not
sure if my source is accurate). I definitely taste it..it comes and
goes during the smoke..perhaps due to the miniscul quantity of it...the
source says 5%. I'm thinking that it's more expensive due to the
addition of the SYRIAN latakia...not sure...any thoughts?..thanks again
for the input on this..Joe G.
I have smoked approximately 3 or 4 tins of Plumcake per year for the last 15 years or so, and I never tasted any latakia in the blend until just a few years ago. Perhaps that's an indication that my taste buds are defective or maybe it's further evidence of Mac Baren's famous 'phantom' latakia! ;-)
About 5 or 6 years ago, coincident with the appearance of new tin art, they definitely changed the toppings and even the tobaccos in several of their blends. In answer to my email inquiry, they refused to acknowledge that any change had been made. However, I'm certain that Virginia No.1, Navy Flake and Plumcake *were* changed, and in two of those three cases, not to my liking. YMMV
