Re: RESULTS! The 2007 ASP Zippo Extra Lighter

If you're just too impatient to wade through my comments, skip to the last paragraph below.

I mentioned about a year ago that I would like to open up the design of the Extra Zippo to anyone who wanted to do a design, instead of always doing it myself. I really didn't expect to get the great ideas you guys came up with. As I've said before, any one of the designs submitted for this contest would make a fine one for the ASP lighter.

I would like to sincerely thank all who submitted design ideas. Also, thanks to all who took the time to vote for their choice. This whole vote by email/using the subject line worked great. Even those who flubbed it had their votes counted. We had 90 votes, enough so we can go with the winner with confidence. Thanks to Bert Olton for doing the website, as well as the lighters. And, finally, to all readers of ASP, thanks for putting up with my announcements, nudges, cajoling and being a pest.

Here is how the voting went:

Design #1 - Ken Dixon's Sherlock Holmes tribute was clearly the winner with 47 votes.
Design #2 - Joe Durham's tobacco cellar was third with 12 votes.
Design #3 - Vince Abadie's what's in your pipe? was fifth with 4 votes, but he finally got his name spelled correctly.
Design #4 - Fedor DeGazz's brotherhood of the briar was second with 17 votes.
Design #5 - Steven Fowler's engraved ASP logo was fourth with 10 votes.

Great job everyone! We can look forward to the 2007 ASP Zippo Extra lighter featuring Sherlock Holmes, *designed by Ken Dixon* next year.

Sorry for the delay, but I had a SiteBuilder program crash...in any case, Bill's announcement of the winning lighter, with appropriate graphics, is up and running at:

Congratulations Ken! That's going to be a prized addition to many collections.

To Joe, Vince, Fedor and Steve, beautiful work as well. So much so in fact, that I refuse to delete the images of your ideas...they'll be archived on the ASP home site as part of the history of the ASP Zippo Pipe Lighter Project along with Ken's and all the other Extras. And who knows...you might want to re enter them for 2008 if we do a design contest again!

Best to all,
Bert
