first pipe....

Hello,
I hope I am at the right place. I just purchased my first pipe, a
bent
semi churchwarden briar, just long enough so a regular pipe cleaner
fits
thru the stem, and am having some confusion about building "cake". The

woman at the tobacco shop was not herself a pipe smoker, and the
proprietor
is out of town for a while, but she gave me a page of instructions. I
am
filling the bowl 3/4 tamping down, lighting, tamping down and lighting
again
and enjoying my smoke. The instructions say to smoke ALL the way down
to ash
the first 10 bowls. But it also says something about not being tempted
to
empty the bowl. Does this mean I keep the old ashes in place and pack
on top
of them during the break in period? Or are the instructions just
printed in
a confusing manner? I seem to be building up a dark grayish "coat"
around
the inside, is that the cake? It really just looks like a sort of thin
solid
ash.

Thanks,

Newbie pipe smoker,

Russ Hutch
