31 August 2006
Good morning Tom, Ed and all
It's 54F with 62% humidity, damp and overcast here in central
Massachusetts at 0600. I worked until nine last night. It's too
early for me to be up and at it again.
This morning I have my improved American/English blend in a squat
no-name straight bulldog. I have a one of those seven-day pipe holders
that I've filled with bulldogs, mostly basket pipes. When I pick out
my pipes for the work day, I generally go to it for my "bulldog of
the day".
Today in history seems to have been a good day for bad news.
On this day in 1864, General William T. Sherman's army attacked
Atlanta. On this day in 1888, Mary Ann Nichols was murdered in London.
She was the first victim of Jack the Ripper. On this day in 1939,
German agents dressed as Poles staged an attack on a German radio
station. This "Polish aggression" was used to justify an attack on
Poland, which subsequently turned into World War II. On this day in
2005, a stampede on a bridge in Baghdad killed 1,200 Shiite pilgrims.
Born on this date: 12 AD - Caligula, Roman emperor.
Have a good day everyone,
Charles
.
