This year Bill Burney stunned us all with a complete re design of the ASP Extra Zippo pipe lighter. Well, in this year's planning for 2007, it gets even worse!...here's Bill's message:
The second round of ASP Zippo lighters is almost done, and we won't have enough time to do a third round before the end of the year, so it's time to look at next year's lighters.
The 2007 ASP traditional lighter will be the same as always, only now with a brass pipe insert.
There will also be an ASP 2007 Extra lighter that will be a design not only chosen by ASP'ers, but *designed* by an ASP'er.
If you recall, the extra lighters for 2004 and 2005 had the ASP logo, like the classic, but on different color lighters. For 2006, the extra was the "Good Pipe, Good Tobacco, Good Friends" design.
For 2007, we need new artwork for the Extra lighter, and one of you will design it.
Starting immediately, I will be accepting designs for the 2007 Extra lighter. Here's how it's going to work:
You come up with an idea for a design. It can be a sketch, a description, an oil painting, doesn't matter. If you can convey the design to me using any combination of drawings and/or words, that's good enough. So you don't have to be able to draw at all to enter a design.
I will take your idea and make it into a design that could become the lighter design. This may involve some emails back and forth between us. When you are happy with the design, it will be added to the entries.
When we have several entries, we'll post them on line and let everyone look them over. Before the end of the year, we'll have a vote on the best design. The winner will get personal gratification and the adoration of the masses, as well as bragging rights.
As part of the design, you can choose the lighter and the color from any of the Zippo Jumbo lighters, except for the Surprise and After Dark lines (which can only be imprinted on the back) and the Slimlines (which won't take the pipe insert). If you choose a color imprint, you can pick the colors from the color chart link below. If you decide on an etched design, colors will not apply.
A couple of tips: sterling silver and gold are beautiful, but generally out of our price range (hell, we've got tobacco to buy!) and colors are only applied as spot colors, so there is no blending or shading and each color is an extra charge, so try to limit yourself to two or three colors. If a design just won't work, due to size and shape or colors, I'll let you know. We can probably work through any difficulties, so don't worry about it yet. And, yes, you can use the ASP logo, if you like.
Here's how to submit your design to me. If you have a sketch, scan it or take a picture of it with a digital camera and send it to me by email. If you don't have a sketch, describe what you're thinking of and email it to me. In either case, I'll do a sketch and send it to you to make sure it's what you had in mind, ask you a few questions about things I'm not clear on, etc. I'll make any adjustments then do a finished design and send it to you. With your OK, I'll add it to the entries.
That's all I can think of for the moment. Good luck.
Bill Burney
