Re: Filtering out trolls (VOX)

All,
I used to really enjoy reading and occasionally posting here but it
seems that lately the group has been overwhelmed by Vox Populi.
Someone earlier mentioned filtering him out. Is there a way to do that
in google groups or do I need to use a fancy reader?

What do you mean by "fancy"? Actually, Google is a relatively new
innovation in Usenet and has only a fraction of the functions
available in the various (mostly free) newsreader programmes.
Basically, Google took over the web-accessible archive started by
Dejaview (not related to the cable channel) and recently added the
ability to post to the existing search and reading functions.
Really, though, Usenet isn't built for web viewing.

There are lots of options which include full filtering capability:

Gravity (I'm using that now)
Just download and install "grav25.exe" from this page:
http://gravity.tbates.org/download/

Thunderbird (also popular)
http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/

If you have Outlook Express installed, it also has a newsreader
function, and you can fairly easily filter unwanted posters and
topics.

This of course presumes that your internet provider offers Usenet
access. Most do, though you might have to call or e-mail them for
instructions on how to set up your software - some companies don't
bother publishing the information you need to access their usenet
feed.

I don't want to
use a different reader

Then you're out of luck. I'm not sure I understand why you don't,
though - if another way of reading Usenet was more convenient and
easier to use (once set up) wouldn't you prefer it?

and if I can't filter, I'll just live with it.
Interesting, if you look at Vox's profile, he trolls several boards.
Must not have much of a life outside of trolling.
Happy 4th to everyone (even Vox I guess). Smoking some Iwan Ries
non-aromatic 3 star royale (thanks to Altadis!) in a Peterson
Killarney.
