I have been curious about this for some time.

Google's new online payment service launched yesterday.
It looks though, it's not direct competitor with PayPal.

It seems to be directed to businesses which are in Google's AdWords program. These vendors will get reductions on their processing fees (which are already lower than PayPal's). A good incentive to get more AdWords users, too.

Here's a good article on how Google Checkout works:

*but* sadly... :

In its Content Policy it lists under "Unacceptable product categories":

Tobacco and cigarettes: "Cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, and related products".

http://checkout.google.com/seller/content_policies.html

Yeah, "Tobacco" is there, along with; "Body parts", "Child pornography" and "Occult goods".

Yeah. All right thinking people 'know' tobacco is evil. Even the Surgeon General says so. :-(
