It true: thread-jacking is impolite. However, nearly all of us do it to
some extent. It's difficult to avoid *not* doing it. What often happens
is that more than one topic or question is raised in a post and each

I agree "sometimes" but all too often you get a whole bunch of responses
that are simply private chit chat between two or more posters that not only
have "nothing" to do with the thread, but are meaningless to most of the
people reading the forum. Thoes type of responses should be sent via email.

Also if these offshoots of the original topic go too far afield while still
about pipe smoking, what's wrong with "modifying" the subject line so others
trying to get information on the original topic can simply scroll down until
they see the original topic?

Consider the alternative, where threads would be strictly limited to one
topic and one topic only with responses limited to direct agreement or
disagreement with the original poster's subject matter, with no room for
exploration of side issues, comments from different perspectives or
differing personal experiences. Unmoderated forums simply *can't*
function like that, and in my opinion, they shouldn't even try.

I post in another moderated forum and don't find it quite as limiting as you
seem to.

In my opinion, threads like this one serve absolutely no purpose but to
further damage already strained relations.

I'm sorry, I totally and emphaticaly diagree with the above statement.

When one finds oneself in what one judges to be a deteriorating
relationship, sometimes the wisest course is to say nothing at all.

Hmmm, I hope your not a marriage counselor by profession.
