Hi Tom.
I have three that are for "decoration and conversational purposes only".
Two are wood and one is ceramic. I don't believe the wooden ones are briar.
I believe most of these pipes are made more for tourist souvenirs and less
for smoking.
I did try smoking the ceramic one but it was too much trouble so I never
smoked it again. Perhaps a waste of money.
I don't think any special tobacco is required. Some have tried filling the
"sump" with alcoholic spirits to flavor the smoke.

Do any of you folks smoke a Tyrolean pipe on a regular basis? My
brother is traveling to Vienna and thinking he could get me one.
I have seen them made in porcelain and briar. Which material is more
traditional? Do Tyrolean pipes require a special kind of tobacco?
