I use a hybrid method. It's a hybrid of the flolded (balled) flake and
Frank methods. I say that because, like the Frank method, most of the
tobacco is in the upper portion of the bowl and the draw is pretty
restricted. I take a whole flake, two flakes or some pieces of broken
flake and ball them up to a size that will not fit into the bowl without
becoming lodged in the upper portion (of the bowl). Yes, I put NOTHING in
the bottom of the bowl. You will find the draw restricted, like with the
Frank method, this isn't a problem. I nearly always top this mess with
some English shag (RYO works, too), to get it going, unless the flake is
really dry. This makes for an extremely cool slow smoke with more flavor
than most smokers are accustomed to, it also stays lit, like with the
Frank method. If your pipe gets more than warm, even with aggressive
smoking, you are doing it wrong, try again. You can thank me later. :)
Puff puff,
Buck
