Hey Ben,
I've had that trouble with brand new Zippo's too. The wick should be
between 1/4 & 1/2 inch long and slightly "frayed" on the end. You must
remember the wick is just that a wick and has to "present" fumes of the
fluid for ignition. The best way I've found to fray the end is a few
strokes with a sharp knife and careful work with needle nosed pliers. Once
you have it "fine tuned" it should give you many many years of trouble free
service.
