Thanks, Joe. I like your take on things, and I do understand what you're saying. While I'd love to go to a pipe show, I don't think any are held reasonably close to Baton Rouge. Reasonably close, for me, would be a day trip by car, since I can't afford to take off time from work right now. If anyone knows of one as close as Houston, maybe, and if it's when I'm off, I'd love to attend one! In the mean time, I'll just admire the bags and lots of other cool pipe accessories via the web.On Thu, 19 Jan 2006 16:45:52 -0600, Vince wrote:
For what it's worth, I think your bags are beautiful, and from all accounts, they are of exceptional quality. However, they are, in fact, way too expensive *for me.* Some day, if I'm in that purchasing range, I'd love to buy one. For now, I tend to carry one pipe at a time, in my pocket, with a vinyl pouch of whatever I'm smoking that day (and my ASP zippo that I only have because it was a gift).
Everything is relative, and that's OK.
I carry my pipes in a toiletry bag that I got at WalMart for about $15. It is Nylon, and it does the job. It is not designed for the job, and that is clear, but it is serviceable.
I think there are many on ASP who, like me, are not able to afford to cellar large amounts of high grade tobaccos and who have real struggles with spending more than $50 on a pipe. Sometimes, when the high end, high quality gear is put out there, and people make comments portraying these as being nearly essential to the hobby, it makes some of us feel a little defensive. That's possibly where some of the "way too expensive" and similar comments originate.
The other side to "everything is relative" is that everything changes.
When I first started smoking pipes, I was amazed that anyone would spend $200 on a single pipe, let alone thousands. And because of that bias, I, too, read people's comments as arrogant and elitest.
After a few heated discussions (in which I made some very fine friends) I started to understand.
When someone posts about their $500 bag, and how fantastic it is, they are not insinuating that you are a loser for not having one. They are, however, expressing their feelings that the bag enhances THEIR enjoyment of their hobby.
I have 2 Ming Tampers. When I used to read Art's ads, I used to laugh. Why would anyone spend $85 for a tamper. I received these as gifts. Now I understand. They are beautiful. They do enhance my enjoyment. I will buy more, as I can spare the money and they call out to me.
And I will, hopefully, buy one of Neil's bags eventually. I cannot swing that money right now. It is not a necessity for me. But I do really want one, and will eventually pull the trigger. And someone will consider me elitest when I jump on here and say I have one. Life will go on.
Again, I think you do beautiful work. I hope to buy one of your bags some day. But for now, I'll just have to admire them from afar.
Go to a pipe show. Then you can admire them from aclose. ;-) I really want to make one of these shows soon.
