Re: 2006 ASP Zippo Extra

All right, just to throw things into even further confusion, here's a second thread on the subject.

Bill Burney of course has been reading the votes and comments on his first design for the 2006 ASP Extra pipe lighter and he took some comments to heart, redid the artwork and has a second, adjusted proposal for you all to consider. Go to the same web page to compare the two, i.e.:

So, how do you keep track of two votes on one item? Or is it two items? Florida Board of Elections got any advice on this? I sense an influx of hanging electronic chads...<g>

Bert

Well, guess it's time I weigh in here. Bert's right, I've been reading the posts. The "alt.smokers.pipes" part of the design was just too fat, it dominated the design and needed to be a lighter font. I tried it with eight good candidate fonts and picked this one Nueva, not just because it was lighter, but because it complemented the design. I took off the website address and unbolded the year to balance the text.

The rest of the design hasn't changed. I believe I used a lighter brown for the pipe than I did the first time, but I'll change that back to the darker brown - I just don't want it to look black. If the newer one looks different otherwise, it's because I did a better job of putting the illustration together (this time I did it all in Illustrator, last time I used Photoshop). The newer one probably looks closer in detail to the way the finished lighter will look.

Just to recap for the newbies who are trying to figure out just what the heck we're doing: Each year Bert Olton puts together two Zippo lighters (with the pipe insert) for purchase by the group.

The ASP standard is always the same: brushed brass with the ASP logo etched on one side.

The extra is a unique lighter for each year. It's made for one year only and not repeated. We've had a Black Ice finish Zippo with the logo in color and a Chrome finish with the black and white logo.

I'm proposing an extra lighter this year that has a design that was created just for this lighter instead of the same logo on a different colored lighter. Nothing against the ASP logo - I love it - heck, I created it. It just seemed like a good idea to have something different - really different - each year that may or may not incorporate the logo.

So, what we're doing here is not "here it is, wanna buy it?" but more like "here's this, do you like it or not?" If the response is mostly favorable, we'll probably go with it. If not, I'll work with Bert to come up with something else.

I've read the responses and tried to make adjustments to the design that would answer the concerns of those who don't like it while not making the design unacceptable to those who do like it. Not easy, but I'm trying.

Anyway, once we get the extra business sorted out, Bert will do the necessary with Zippo, then announce here that the lighters are available for sale. www.aspipes.org will have the full information about ordering and we'll be good to go.

I hope this makes this craziness a little more understandable. Democracy isn't always pretty.
