Re: 2005 ASP Zippos Gone

Bert,

I love my traditional and my 2005 extra.

For the 2006 extra, since you threw it open to the community for suggestions, I'd like to suggest that it be a polished chrome or polished brass (not brushed) Zippo with BillB's new multi-color simplified (austere) re-designed logo (or some similitude) inset in brightly colored enamel.

Please. I'll buy two of them for sure, if designed thus or very similar, even if they are more expensive that way.

Thanks,
Skip.

Not a lot needs to be said beyond the Subject Line, but I'll say a lot more anyway. Anyone sick of hearing from me on this subject need not read further.

I'll start with a bit of a retrospective. Our first year of doing the ASP Zippos, we bought up 200 lighters. The second year, the one with the Black Ice model, 250 were purchased. This year, only 100 were procured.

I attribute that big drop in sales to two factors. First, the Extra version this year was a lame, plain Jane design. My fault entirely. Second, there is bound to be a saturation point in a group like this - 450 lighters in the first couple of years pretty much gets an ASP Zippo into the hands of the majority of the group. That 100 more were sold this year is terrific.

It's *really* terrific that the 100 lighters sold this year because of the stupid thing I did. To make the shipping details and other involvements with this project easier on myself, I went out on a limb with the 2005 lighters and bought the 100 lighters outright. That not only made it all simpler for me, but it made it so that I could ship your lighters to you much more quickly - essentially as soon as you ordered them. Great idea, but had ASP only purchased 20 Zippos this year, I'd have been stuck with 80 very nice pipe lighters to add to my formerly non existent Zippo collection.

So...my thanks to you all for your LAD (Lighter Acquisition Disorder).

However, I don't think I'll do that again. Since I am not a Zippo retailer, since I am not making any money on any of the lighter sales, I will in future revert to the first two years methodology on this whole thing - i.e., pre paid orders will be gathered until the minimum factory order of 50 is collected, then the order will be placed with the factory and I'll ship those all out once received.

More precise and less verbose details of that methodology will be posted on the ASP web site in due course. Due Course being the 2006 round of ASP Zippos, which will include of course the Traditional and an as yet undetermined Extra.

Which remembers me of another *thank you* due to the group - namely, for your tolerance of my until now arbitrary claim on the determination of what will be the Extra lighter each year. If you all prefer, I here-by rescind that undemocratic rite and will bow to ASP's annual choice in the matter, should you wish to make it so.

Ah...I'm making this a lot more complex and boring than it all ready is...sorry about that. The gist of it is, this year was in my mind a success...for that, my thanks to you all. May the future of the ASP Zippos, and indeed the purpose of the entire group, be as good as has been the past.

Greetings, best wishes and thanks to all,

Bert
