Ed,
I really like Director, I have used it for years. Once you get the hang
of how things work, you will be surprised by how much you can do with
it. There are a ton of built-in behaviours that allow you to author
projects very easily. The trick comes when you want it to do something
there is no pre-built behavoir for. You are then left to code the
effect yourself in the scripting language Lingo, which is part of the
program.
To the rest of the screensaver community, there are also lots of
utilities that will convert a powerpoint presentation into a
screensaver. Powerpoint is pretty easy to use, has lots of effects,
transitions and such. Just do a google search for powerpoint and
screensaver and you will find these utilites.
