Ok Fred, here are my thoughts:
I get ASP just the way I want it: posts marked with OT or AD get
filtered out (but recallable by flag if I wish). Posts that quote the
entire article get the quote collapsed automatically. This happens
not just because I use a user-programmable reader (Gnus), but
because I put forth the effort to make reading ASP more comfortable
*to me*, *_and I recognize that although such information may not
be to my particular liking, others seem to enjoy it_*.
Even if one doesn't use an advanced reader, all the common, more
or less free readers (OE, Agent, etc) have a filtering mechanism.
Folks should use it, especially if they find two letter tags
(OT, AD, etc) so very frightening :) Or if they just can't stand
the words of ______, they should filter ______ out. They can't
require, from any legitimate perspective that others cleave to
their will. There are all manner of pages on the WWW that describe
how to do this, it's also been described here in ASP. One does have
to put forth the effort to learn how.
Some of the netiquette problems could by addressed by a regular
weekly posting of the ASP FAQ with a "New Folk should really, really,
please read this, PLEASE!" subject line. I know, nobody reads them
but putting it out there - frequently - removes the obvious excuse.
The other half of the equation is us - the readership. When somebody
violates a FAQ practice respectfully and politely inform them on-list.
Then via email if it happens again. If they persist, ignore them.
It's our house, people. Ain't nobody going to clean it up but us.
Who knows, maybe somebody will be very bored and read the FAQ and
actually follow it, in whole or in part. It's at least one less
offender of netiquette "out there". ;)
Moving on, I've a question relating to this part:

> ASP. Names have been named. I would like to welcome your opinions.
How does one know about these "well known, experienced...." types?
For many new arrivals, that means ASP. If the well known types
abandoned the field to the newly arrived unwashed masses, it seems
to me they lost their bitchin' rights. This same reasoning of mine
applies to #7 (newbies pretending to be experienced).
It also ties into #5 (false information being spread). The best
and as far as I know, the only way to counter bullshit is with
the truth. Again, if they've abandoned the field..... then
they're letting the falsehood stand. Who's to blame for this?
(Hint: it ain't me and thee, we're still here).
To sum it up: The "explanations" you give are not reasons,
they are the observed effects of useful expertise leaving. For
the "experts" to decry this .... aren't they pointing the
finger at themselves?
Or could it be that some of these "experts" really have no desire
to be useful to others, but rather wish to use ASP as one big
ego stroking tool? I'd like to think not, but some of what I've
read does make me ask that question.
