Sounds like this person hasn't a clue about how to get things to clients.
In (stark) contrast, when I order something from McGaheys, we first
correspond by e-mail and agree on the order. He then sends it by POST with
insurance if required, which costs only a few extra pounds. He always takes
off the VAT (17.6% tax) because it's not a UK sale and invariably ships it
the same day he gets my e-mail, only charging my credit card when the goods
are parcelled up and on the way to the post office.
Oh, as for duties, Customs are usually happy to let it in free of taxes if
it's too small to warrant the paperwork. GST here is only 10%, so a $100
order is not worth it to them. It's all done legal and above-board, with
correct and genuine prices shown on the accompanying receipt, as well as
proper content identification on the customs docket.
