However, in a more broad sense, there is a problem in that the devout often claim that specific instructions given to one individual were intended as life lessons to be applied to everyman, and so to cherry pick one instance in a debate and claim "oh, well... that's just one specific instruction given to one individual" seems like a weak argument, to me.

Otherwise, you end up with weird stuff like Jesus only told a handful of listeners to love their neighbors as themselves and, really, pretty much everything he said was said to either one person or a small group -- certainly not to you & me!

As a general rule I think that, if we are to take Jesus' teachings as life coaching, then we have to apply an "if it was good advice for one guy, and made it into the Jesus' Teaching Handbook (Bible), then it was probably intended to apply to everyone" approach, otherwise the whole system pretty much falls apart.

....Well, unless we're going with the "our spiritual leaders interpret for us and tell us which rules apply to us and which don't" system, but I think most here agree that ...hmmm... ok, most here don't agree about whether that's lame or not. ;)
