First, tupperware & ziplock bags make for lousy humidors, even with
beads/PG/your-humidity-control-of-choice. The problem is that the
plastic, itself has ZERO humidity buffer, leaving all that work to your
humidity-control and the cigars, themselves. That's why most humidors
are made of wood -- it naturally buffers things and helps with the
process of humidity control.
If you can't get another humidor right away (?!), at least stick your
cigars in a wooden box and put THAT in your tupperware/ziplock.
I know. My plan is to scrounge some cedar sheets or an empty
cigar box from a shop (while buying cigars, of course) or to buy
a box full if I have to (I don't normally buy that kind of
quantity), and improve the tupperdor with bits of wood.
On to your question: I think the beads-tube should be ok, so long as
you don't get to a point where mold is visibly on it. Even then, you
can probably wipe it off and be fine. If you're worried about it,
humistat beads aren't THAT expensive!
ok, thanks!
Also, I don't know the particular cigar with which you had a problem,
but it's fairly common for cigars to get a bit of "surface mold", which
wipes off easily with a paper towel or on the leg of your jeans,
leaving a perfectly smokable cigar. If the mold is so severe so as to
penetrate the surface of the cigar, cutting off a bit of it probably
isn't going to help, you may just have a stick of compost.
I wasn't clear. The tiny stuff that looked like mold was in the
end of the foot, not on the wrapper. That's why I chopped 1/4"
off the cigar -- and I didn't see any more of it on the cut
faces.
Good luck! Be sure to report back. :)
I'll try to remember.
