The Ultimate is a fair smoke but the Alternatives are nothing like
what they are trying to copy. And the Alternatives aren't worth
smoking IMO.

Not everyone can afford $10 smokes.

There are plenty of cheaper smokes out there, The Edge comes to mind
as one of them, and, I'll take an Edge over a Davidoff or any of the
JR "Alternatives."

Um. See, I've never been that crazy for the Edge or Consuegras. And
I got a promotional sample of the Ultimates when they first came out.
Incredible cigar. I bought a box -- nothing like it. I've had them
once or twice since without being impressed. But on all your recs
I'll try them again.

Many JR Alts I've had were not worth smoking (Punch Rothschilds & LGC
Wavells immediately spring to mind) but I've also had some good ones.
I love the Perdomo Reserve #2 in natural and smoke them like eating
chips -- can't have just one. I love the Monte B but they have to be
aged 4-6 months and the #2 rocks right out of the bundle. OTOH, I
just finished a 6 m.o. bundle of Monte Bs and WOW! The aroma when I
opened them! The rich flavors! The quality varies -- that is a lot
of what you pay for in more expensive smokes -- but, to me, at $1.25-
$1.75 a stick they are worth it. Now, with hints I've dropped,
Christmas may bring a LARGE number of Alts I've never had before.
With luck, I'll find something to add to the rotation.

And, no, they are nothing like the cigar they are "alternative" to.
