Trusting in God's mercy is a virtue. *Assuming* God's mercy no matter
what is a vice.

How is "trusting in God's mercy" different from "assuming God's mercy"?

Let's put it another way: Let's say I tell you "I trust in God's mercy"
-- let's call that a given. It seems to me that either:

(a) I assume that God will always be merciful to me -- my trust is
unyielding and unwavering.
or
(b) I do not assume that God will always be merciful to me, which
demonstrates a weakness in my trust.

You're using the two words interchangeably. Trusting in God's mercy
means that you try to be good, when you screw up, you're sorry for
your sins, and with firm resolve try not to sin again. You're sure
that God will be merciful because you're approaching Him with love and
humility.

I'm not sure how to use the words any other way -- that's sort of what
my question is about: if I'm *sure* that God will be merciful, how is
that not an assumption?

You believe no matter how you act and whether you are sorry or not that God will take you to heaven.

Right, I get that end of it.

However, if I say that it is NOT true that I can act however I want and God will take me to heaven, then aren't I saying "God is not infiniately merciful" and, by extention "I do not have trust/faith in God's infinite mercy"? (Or, rather, "my trust is incomplete.")

See what I mean?

Now you are starting to get it. :)

Bah! This reminds me of the stupid "rock bigger than he can lift" thing...
