But that's neither here nor there. I was just saying that it's unlikely that anyone was ever shocked to find that thing-A was caused by thing-B when they don't believe in thing-B.

Similarly (and this isn't drawing parallel to your God and Santa Clause -- that's for another thread! ;) -- it's an analogy of the logic of the statement), no one who doesn't believe in Santa Clause was ever shocked to learn that that's where all the Christmas presents come from.

Maybe less-baggage-laden would be: no one who doesn't believe in Global Warming is shocked to learn the Global Warming is the cause of the particularly hot Summer they experienced.
