If that is a whiney bunch of crap, then the opposite of "if

I disagree. In the U.S. o' Land Of Opportunity, anyway, and here's
why: The Navy is hiring.
They'll teach you a useful and valuable trade, in addition to
discipline & help get both your mind and your body into shape. The
pay, while it seems low when you look at the charts, is actually quite
good considering that you're getting paid and fed and housed in return
for a little manual labour, a lot of slacking off and all the education
you care to dedicate yourself to. If you care to make a career of it,
you can retire quite nicely by the time your 38. Heck, by that time,
you could start a small business or embark on a new career, if the idea
of laying by the pool and sucking mai-tais doesn't suit you.
That's actually a great career path; you only forgot to
mention retirement benefits which are also not to be sneezed
at, if memory serves.
But they choose not to do it.
Which begs the question "why?"
If service in the armed forces is such a good way to
education, social security, career and, let's not forget,
citizenship, why are there not queues round the block? Why
is there, in fact, a recruitment shortfall?
