I think the general problem is with the word "excessive" which seems to imply that there is an amount that is too much. It's the same problem we have with "excessive wealth" (or income.)

Obviously, if you step over ethical and legal lines to obtain your wealth/income, that's bad. But one could legally and ethically obtain 10x as much and not be "to excess."

And so, with greed.
