Okay, my two questions are: Is Ubuntu a good, reliable OS? How
difficult is it to make the transition?

Yes, ooboontoo is a solid OS.

If you can get Windows to do what you want, you can handle ooboontoo.

There will be a brief "reindoctrination period", while you get the hang
of The Linux Way. It's not as bad as some make it sound. Imagine an OS
written by gearheads for gearheads, and it'll all make perfect sense.

How does it work for us non gearhead types?

Works fine. It's just different than Windows.

For instance, instead of downloading software from the Web, or buying
a CD, you open an application called the "Synaptic Package Manager"
and select what you want to install.

An even easier choice would be LinuxMint, which is a spruced-up ubuntu
with all of the Multimedia apps you'd want already installed... And
the package manager for Mint even has pretty pictures... ;-)

I will look intot hat one as well.

Just getting my toes wet so far and didn;t realize Ubuntu ddi not have
a media player (so I'm guessing the WMP I'm so used to won;t work with
other OS?)

"WMP" is Windows Media Player.

There are plenty of Media Players for linux. The difference between
Ubuntu and Mint are pretty much the Codecs. The media players work
fine, but many media formats are copyrighted, restricted formats.
Ubuntu does not include any such things, but it isn't too hard to
install them. Mint, on the other hand, comes with all of them already
installed and ready to go.

For instance, due to the encryption, you cannot pop a DVD into a fresh
Ubuntu machine and have it play (a commercial DVD, anyhow). You would
first have to install the CSS libraries. MP3's need special codecs.
Mint would have all of this ready to go for you.
