QUESTION: Why are so many able bodied people out of work when there's
enough work to be had that we 'require' illegals to do it?

The out of work feel entitled to more money than their work is worth.

The work is worth less, as clearly evidenced by the people who are
willing to do it.

Except that now companies are filling minimum wages jobs with people
that have college, including graduates.

Nowadays, the guy behind the counter at the Circle-K may well have a
bachelor degree.

A bachelor degree doesn't get you what it used to.

While there will always be oddball anecdotes (which is why they're
interesting), overall, if a person is worth more, they'll get a job that
pays more. On the converse, if a person can't find a job that pays
more, maybe they're not worth as much as they think.

Of course, it's not very pretty if YOU'RE the one who thinks you're
worth more money and no one else does, but that's pretty much the way
economics works.

As a tangent, minimum wage screws things both ways.

1) It sets up a feeling of entitlement, such that 16 yr olds feel that
they "deserve" $8/hr to sit on their ass & read comic books.

2) At $8/hr, employers don't bother hiring additional people to do $1/hr
jobs. Instead, someone else gets saddled with them. Poof, instant
demotion.

If there's a kid who's willing to do some work for me for $1/hr, and I
have work for which I'm willing to pay $1/hr (and, of course, I provide
a safe environment where the kid isn't going to loose an arm or breathe
asbestos-dust or whatever), I don't see why the two of us aren't allowed
to work something out.

Kid: Hey mister, I'll <whatever> for $1/hr, if you want.

Me: Love to, kid, but it's illegal.

Kid: I won't tell.

Me: Bless you, kid. Here's a dollar; go do something nice for somebody
for an hour...
