Not like in a socialized system. Do our patients in the USoA wait
several months before bypass surgery if needed?

To simplify matters slightly: why is it better to have a
bypass done as soon as is convenient when it may not be
medically indicated but simply because the patient has
private insurance? Should the final arbiter not be the
physician's considered opinion?

Maybe it is just my personal preference, but I would rather
have medical recommendations put to me on the basis of .
medical need than for any other reason. Not every tumour
needs the immediate three-bell alarm treatment. Not every
cancer needs instant all-out attack.

I also wonder how big the cost of over-medication is to the
system. Defensive measures aside, aggressive and invasive
treatment always comes with risks and not infrequently
results in a whole new set of health complaints. It might
be interesting if this cost were spelled out in a debate on
healthcare.

My mother had to wait 3 months for her first hip replacement. Then she had
to wait another three months for the second. She had to wait 9 months for
her cataract surgery and a full year for the second. I missed my
appointment with my endo back in February. I was rescheduled for September.
It was the soonest they could fit me in.

The average wait in Canada for example is measured in weeks for those same
procedures. Much faster if say, you are turning blue from a bad heart. And
in that case nobody hovers over you asking what your insurance company is
before asking your name. The WHO places Canada way above the US in terms of
availability of care. France is even higher than that.
