This was risky, and no two ways about it. Hostage rescue
always is. And if they didn't know before, the French
rescue a couple of days ago shows what the price can be.
Any operation is risky. This one was wide open.
This makes it only sensible not to rush into anything guns
blazing and writing letters of condolence later.
What I still fail to understand is why we can't put a squad
of soldiers on as many ships as possible. It would be far
cheaper than sending ships of the line -- the equivalent of
using elephant guns to shoot mosquitoes. It wouldn't even
be necessary to have armed guards on every ship, only enough
of them to make the pirates think three times before
launching an attack.
